Tampa General Hospital And Casa Ybor Reveal Plans For New Hospital, Clinic In Historic Ybor City
Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and developer Darryl Shaw are teaming up to bring a major health care project to east Ybor City.
The plan includes a new hospital, clinic, and medical office building, expanding access to world-class care while supporting the neighborhood’s ongoing revitalization.
Shaw, CEO of Casa Ybor, said the project aligns with his broader vision to transform Ybor into a vibrant, mixed-use community with new jobs, housing, and businesses. Tampa City Council recently approved a Comprehensive Plan amendment allowing mixed-use development on parcels owned by Shaw, paving the way for TGH to purchase about 10 acres—with an option for another 6.45 acres—west of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway Connector.
The new facilities will offer primary and urgent care services, as well as potential office, retail, hotel, and residential space.
“Patients shouldn’t have to choose between convenience and quality,” said Adam Smith, TGH’s executive vice president and chief ambulatory care officer.
The announcement follows TGH’s recent opening of a 32,000-square-foot innovation center in Ybor City, home to its TGH Ventures and IT teams. Both projects are part of the growing Tampa Medical and Research District, a hub for health care, research, and technology that is helping fuel the city’s economic growth.
Shaw’s broader redevelopment efforts, including the nearby Gasworx district, continue to link Ybor City with downtown Tampa and Water Street, blending modern development with the area’s rich cultural heritage.
