Florida’s healthcare system is facing a significant challenge as the state anticipates a massive influx of retirees.

With over 4.1 million Americans reaching retirement age annually through 2027, Florida, especially areas like Orlando, is bracing for a surge in healthcare demand.

Despite recent Certificate of Need (CON) reforms, the state’s healthcare system grapples with three key issues:

  • Insufficient Staffing: A shortage of healthcare professionals to meet the growing needs.
  • Inadequate Infrastructure: Current facilities may not be equipped to handle the increased patient volume.
  • Continued Population Growth: The ongoing increase in the retiree population will put sustained pressure on healthcare services.

The highest demand for healthcare services is expected in primary care, geriatrics, behavioral health, emergency medicine, oncology, cardiology, and nursing.

While the 2019 CON reform aimed to streamline expansion by eliminating certain requirements for hospitals and specialty services, challenges may persist, particularly in rural areas and with staffing.
