BayCare and HCA Florida are adding hospital, outpatient and emergency-care facilities across northern Manatee County as rapid residential growth increases demand for medical services closer to home.

Manatee County’s sustained population growth is prompting healthcare providers to make significant investments in new hospitals, outpatient centers and emergency-care facilities.

One of the largest projects underway is BayCare Hospital Manatee, a full-service hospital being developed in Palmetto. The approximately 436,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in 2028 with 154 private patient rooms. Plans allow the hospital to expand to as many as 207 beds as demand increases.

The hospital is expected to provide internal medicine, general and orthopedic surgery, obstetrics and neonatal intensive care, including a Level II NICU. BayCare is positioning the campus as a regional healthcare destination capable of providing patients with coordinated services without requiring them to travel farther into the Tampa Bay area.

Across from the hospital site, BayCare is also preparing to open a Health Hub offering primary and specialty care, outpatient laboratory services and diagnostic imaging. The combined investment in the hospital and related facilities exceeds $500 million.

HCA Florida is expanding its presence in the county as well. The health system recently opened HCA Florida North River Ranch Emergency in Parrish, providing full-service emergency care to one of the region’s fastest-growing residential areas.

The freestanding emergency department has treated thousands of patients since opening in October, according to HCA Florida South Shore Hospital CEO Cathy Edmisten. The early demand illustrates the need for additional healthcare capacity in communities east of Interstate 75 and throughout northern Manatee County.

Both BayCare and HCA Florida have indicated that their facilities may expand alongside future population growth. The projects are intended to improve access to urgent, outpatient and hospital-based care in communities where healthcare options have historically been limited.
