Tampa General Opens A Primary Care Center Dedicated To Treating The Military
Tampa General Hospital has launched a specialized primary care clinic exclusively for military personnel and veterans.
Located at 2106 S. Lois Ave., the Military & Veteran Primary Care Center provides a range of services, including primary care, behavioral health, lab testing, and pharmacy services, the hospital announced in a recent press release.
The clinic was developed within an existing Tampa General Medical Group facility in South Tampa, ensuring reservists, National Guard members, and veterans have dedicated access to health care professionals by appointment.
“Tampa General is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our military community,” said Adam Smith, the hospital’s executive vice president and chief ambulatory officer.
To further enhance care, the facility features a nurse navigator specializing in veteran needs. This role focuses on care coordination, patient education, connecting patients with resources, and advocating for their well-being. The nurse navigator also assists with specialized mental health care for complex conditions beyond the clinic’s existing behavioral health services for anxiety and depression.
“Military service often leads to invisible wounds that can have long-term health impacts,” Smith added.
The clinic was designed with direct input from military advocacy organizations to create an environment that fosters a sense of unity and understanding between patients and providers. Contributions from TGH’s veteran resource group and Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital initiative supporting veterans with post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety, played a key role in shaping the center.
“This clinic exemplifies our commitment to addressing the unique needs of veterans,” said Dr. Karna Patel, vice president of Tampa General Medical Group. “Our goal is to expand these services to improve access to quality health care for veterans statewide.”
Future plans include extending care to family members. The center began accepting patients in February.
